When someone says “business,” or “marketing,” or “branding,” I automatically yawn, roll my eyes, and start making a mental list of all the more interesting things I have to do that day.

At least, I used to react that way.

Coming from a family of teachers, I am very familiar with math tests and bulletin boards. I am not at all familiar with “business.” I thought “business” involved wearing a boring suit in a cubicle for a giant company that beats your spirit to a pulp and gives you a gold watch if you manage to survive until retirement.

And then I realized that there are millions of people who have smaller, friendlier, (dare I say it?) fun businesses that they run from the comfort of their own laptops. And great photos help make their business websites, which are really their storefronts, look professional.

I was lucky enough to work with Write with Rosie on the rebrand of her website and had The. Best. Time.  Since Rosie is a writer who specializes in editing college entrance applications, resumes, and website content, she works with a wide variety of people. We wanted to make her young and spunky enough to appeal to high schoolers, but mature enough to be taken seriously by professionals….all while emphasizing her creative side.  Her website already contained photos, but they had been taken at different places and at different times. She needed a streamlined photo shoot to pull together the look of her site.

We spent tons of time talking about how Rosie wanted to brand herself based on businesses she loves—she wanted a combination preppy/vintage vibe, like ModCloth or Anthropologie. To get that look, we talked about what colors she would use on her website, who her ideal clients were, and what types of props and settings would best portray both her fun-loving personality and her word nerd status.  (Hint: a blue typewriter was involved!)

Check out Write with Rosie’s new and improved branding photos below, and to see them in action on her site, go to WriteWithRosie.com.

One of our goals was to take pictures that left a lot of blank space for text to be added later, giving Rosie the opportunity to turn something like this:

into this:
