Katie & KJ: Engaged | Boston Wedding Photographer

Question…did you know you could get your PhD in photography?  As in, be a Doctor of Photography?  Don’t worry….I had no clue either.  Until, that is, my sweet friend Katie met the love of her life.  When she first told me she had a new guy, I asked all the obvious questions like where is he from, and what does he do, and was floored when she responded that he was finishing up his doctorate in, none other than, photography.  When you earn a degree like that, you don’t shoot weddings or family sessions, you get flown to random beautiful places like Cambodia to make commercials for companies like Nike, or to Machu Picchu to create documentaries about the native Inca’s from the 15th century (and they fly you first class, of course!).  KJ is crazy talented in his field and I’m sure has thousands of really famous and talented photographer friends, which is why I was completely floored when Katie approached me about taking their pictures.  And I won’t even pretend like I wasn’t completely nervous to pull out my little old camera and tell Dr. KJ how and where to stand to take his picture.  Luckily, he was nice enough to let me act as the “expert” that day.

But I should back up because I have to tell you more about my friend, Katie.  When I first moved to Boston, I had an amazing job working for Boston College and supervising student teachers.  It happened that one of my students was placed in Katie’s 1st grade classroom.  But that isn’t where our friendship flourished…that’s where I basically looked at Katie and wondered how I could make friends with someone like her.  Luckily, I kept my thoughts to myself and went about my way keeping our conversations on a professional basis, never to admit I had secretly had a friend-crush on her.  As fate would have it, I was randomly at a house party one day where I walked in and saw none other than Katie sitting on the couch.  Finally, I had a chance to befriend the girl, and after I totally freaked her out by saying “I know you!”, we were able to develop a friendship that has lasted over the years.  The best thing about Katie? Besides the fact she’s super nice, extremely fun, and makes the most delicious cookie bars you’ve ever sunk your teeth into?  She’s from Buffalo!  Love finding NYers in Boston!

Katie and KJ wanted pictures in Beacon Hill and The Public Garden, so we made what we thought, was a really smart decision to take them on a Thursday morning when all was quiet.  Little did we know that EVERYONE in Boston decided to be out and about that day.  But Katie and KJ acted like the only ones in the city, making it so easy to capture the love between them.  (And I should mention that could not have captured this love if it weren’t for my two assistants…HUGE thank you to Julie and Ethan for carrying my bags, holding my reflector, and making sure I didn’t get hit by any cars while my big belly and I romped the streets).

And then we strolled on over to The Public Garden where every day camp in the Greater Boston Area decided to take a field trip to that day.  Thanks day camps!

I think one of these two are my favorites.  Love how the little duck strategically swam over to the little corner right there in the bottom picture–I totally planned that. Absolutely.

We ended at Katie’s old apartment.  Did I mention she used to live in the building attached to the Taj?  Can you see why I wanted to be friends with the girl?

And a big old send off by the beautiful couple and my trusty old assistants.  (The little one’s pretty adorable, don’t ya think?)
